American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay during the government shutdown, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are wearing thin," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary said he expects the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the pressure," he said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, adding that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking side jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of employees - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on the weekend, rendering it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to controllers.

"I require my staff concentrating on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy said.

On Sunday, some planes were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, leading to interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights extending north to the metropolis of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice went out at 8:45 AM local time on Sunday. Numerous trips were operating normally before noon.

Flights at Newark Liberty International Airport, though, were delayed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA said Dallas Fort-Worth, the second most active airport in the country, could encounter difficulties from low staffing later in the day.

The agency advised travelers in California to consult carriers about updated flight schedules.

The issue comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month before the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak times to travel by air in the US.

Strain on American aviation helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping travel at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
