Battlefield 6's Casual Game Mode Ignites Intense Debates Over AI Players, XP Rewards, and Queue Times
Over the weekend, Battlefield Studios launched a fresh game mode titled Casual Breakthrough. To put it simply, this mode resembles the regular Breakthrough setup but features several notable changes:
- Every squad has just eight human participants, with the rest filled by AI-controlled opponents.
- Actions done by human gamers grant complete experience points, while AI activities provide reduced XP.
- Just a pair of maps can be played: Cairo Siege and Empire State.
- Elements like Player tags, accolades, and career stat updates are disabled.
So essentially, this mode delivers on its name: it offers a casual version of Breakthrough. On the surface, you might think there's nothing wrong, since it provides additional choices for players looking for alternative methods to enjoy the title. But, if video games has shown one thing, it is that not everyone will be happy. Which is to say, a lot of Battlefield 6 fans are upset.
Player Reactions: From Fury to Praise
"Gamers prefer real players. Don't repeat the mistakes of your competitors," reads a response to the official announcement. "Absolutely shocking concept," says another. Meanwhile, on the Battlefield subreddit, one user notes, "It's unclear where we are headed with this title," and someone else details everything they believe to be problematic in Battlefield 6: "Fix bugs, fix drone glitch, fix IVF rockets, fix [the] bloom after sprinting bug, improve hit detection. We do not require this bot mode."
On the other hand, for every complaint, some gamers explaining how much they're liking the new mode. "It's enjoyable to practice, human participants keep it from being a complete grind but it's very relaxed," says one Reddit comment. "This subreddit fails to see that there are gamers who have lives and can't play this title 24/7. Let them strike a balance," adds a different comment. One reply on Twitter clarifies that as they're "a parent gamer with busy schedules, this is perfect for me," and someone else applauds the mode for "not being overcompetitive."
Valid Concerns and Player Input
All that said, players have constructive reasons to complain about Casual Breakthrough. A few folks have highlighted that it could increase wait times even longer for different playlists due to the large amount of playlists currently available. On a similar note, some areas often face AI-filled matches in the current modes. It also seems a little backwards that the mode won't start without a minimum number of human gamers, even though it primarily centers on fighting AI opponents.
Finally, a major complaints is that Battlefield Portal was promised to provide full XP, including AI matches, but that was removed when they attempted to eliminate bot farms from the mode. So Casual Breakthrough seems like the community compromising in the middle, according to forum feedback. A different user describes this mode as the devs "dropping the ball significantly, I experienced great enjoyment in the initial release, why did they feel the need to change it?"
Future Prospects: Adjustments Be Made?
Should the development team has proven anything to date with Battlefield 6, it's that they're listening and acting on player input. Assignments being too difficult got fixed very quickly, just like the required Redsec challenges. Chances are that, if their data indicates this new playlist isn't performing to their expectations, they won't be shy to change it again.
