Israelis have come together throughout the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-conducted assault on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured back to Gaza as hostages. It was the uniquely deadliest day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"The bloodthirsty enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the leader added on Tuesday.

He also vowed to "accomplish all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will no longer create a risk to Israel".

Commemorative Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official memorials until mid-October - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still took place throughout the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the affected families, it was aired throughout Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was held across the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the Egyptian tourist destination of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to review the conditions of the proposal.

A prominent Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions indicated that an late session of negotiations commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative said the earlier meeting ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over safeguards Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not restart hostilities after the opening period of the agreement.

He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to produce any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are making efforts to reduce the gaps between the two sides.

Key Points in Discussions

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the territory

Citizen Reaction

In the city's public square that day, young Hagar - whose sibling survived the attack on the gathering, where many attendees were killed and many more were captured by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location seems like home anymore and until each abducted person return no one will feel safe."

"After we see everyone home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can start to recover," she added.

Near the leader's home in Jerusalem, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the hostages. Israel says forty-eight continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be living.

Activist one woman stated: "We need do any agreement required for the hostages to return. But we really want assurances that we will be secure."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around seventy percent of the population prefer the war to conclude in return for the freedom of the hostages.

Palestinian Situation

At the site of Nova festival, grieving people came together to pay their respects.

From the site, the noise of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers reported the severe Israeli attacks persisted.

In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were documented in the morning of Tuesday in the western district, Rimal and locality areas and in the east side neighbourhood of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the dusk comes, the anxiety appears with it," displaced urban resident a local woman, whose young son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack last year, explained.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the attacks. All the night we are sleeping together, embracing, notably my youngest child who puts his face on me the entire evening."

"Constantly we monitor the reports to see the situation. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the fighting will return to us."

Humanitarian Situation

The medical facility in Gaza City announced it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including several who died in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
