Jurgen Klopp admits a return to lead Liverpool is plausible in theory.
The German coach, who departed from Anfield in 2024, indicated that returning someday is something that could happen. Klopp, following a hugely successful nine-season tenure which brought a European Cup triumph and ending the club's long wait in 30 years, now holds positions in a global football capacity with the Red Bull group and in an advisory capacity to Germany's league body.
Fan Sentiment and His Frank Comments
They secured the Premier League under Arne Slot, yet numerous supporters who adore the manager would embrace the idea of his potential comeback. In a wide-ranging interview, he shared with his interviewer: “I stated I refuse to lead another team in England. Therefore if then it’s Liverpool...absolutely. Theoretically it’s possible.”
“Being 58, so I could make the decision down the line, it's uncertain. Must I choose now? In that case, I'd stay away. Fortunately, it's not necessary. I can just see how things unfold.”
What Would Lure Him Back?
Questioned regarding what circumstances would have to unfold to draw him back to the touchline, Klopp admitted he feels no immediate pull to such a return. “I don’t even know exactly, My present work fulfills me,” he stated. “I don't crave being a coach; I don’t miss standing during downpours for two-and-a-half or three hours; I don’t miss going to interviews repeatedly each week or doing numerous chats weekly.
“No nostalgia for the changing area per se, however, dining out with the team having a nice chat, I appreciate that. With many victories so there was often positive atmosphere around the place. I can still hear Virgil [Van Dijk’s] laugh vividly recalled for example.”
Praise for His Successor
He commended of the current boss, crediting him for the adjustments that won the league last term. The team has suffered a string of losses across various tournaments after a summer spending spree, yet he dismissed the suggestion it could be a decline.
“[Liverpool have] an incredible striker such as Wirtz, critics will regret with negative comments. He’s an incredible talent. Ekitike, excellent performer. They have a strong thoughtfully assembled roster. Fans shouldn't fret about Liverpool, they'll bounce back.”
Heartfelt Words for Diogo Jota
Klopp also spoke emotionally regarding the passing of Diogo Jota, a 2020 acquisition in 2020, and the effect on Liverpool. The Portugal international was killed in a car crash together with his sibling recently.
“How do you replace somebody like Diogo? It’s not about the player himself, it’s the guy he was. I can’t imagine the team environment missing him. I find it difficult to discuss regarding this. It was an incredible shock for all the boys too. Nobody at Liverpool might employ it for poor performances but it is the situation. Being in that space where his spirit remains. Coping with it individually is not easy. Overwhelming.”
