Halligan was appointed in the role recently following Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction regarding the progress of inquiries targeting political opponents.
This action is the president’s latest effort to leverage the Department of Justice to punish adversaries.
This occurs 14 days following charges were filed targeting the former FBI director.
Career prosecutors drafted a memorandum in that case explaining the reasons charges lacked merit.
Comey pleaded not guilty on Wednesday.
