Senegal's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

When I enter the room, Lamine Camara picks up a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a powerful visual metaphor for a ambition he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He didn’t want me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, Génération Foot were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the training centre. They prevented me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period was 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to the title and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family support to keep him focused.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. Additionally, he's a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Goals

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” he said.

Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really at ease here,” he insists. He is often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the main top prize down the line.

“The pressure is on us – that's the reality. Having beaten England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
