The Game UN:Me: A Psychological Thriller Merging Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay

The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one in particular has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a girl harboring several human souls inside her needs to flee from a labyrinth of the mind," states developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Shattered Consciousness

In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie medical facility, though additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.

An Environment of Personal Dread

"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can activate something primal within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."

The core mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that emerges at a particular time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by orderlies all sporting the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have enormous blooms where their necks are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a singular mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," notes a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

After a player have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is very easy to choose incorrectly.

"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced release date, but it is available to follow on platforms.
