The Year 2026 Hailed as the Era of the Frog Game.
While I found the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Croaking characters are anything but new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a cult following. But, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a great many are legitimate Frog Games.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I performed a detailed review into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming appears especially pronounced.
The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics
Honestly, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and grappling abilities lend themselves to a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. For instance the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the largest year yet.
When these games find success—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
