Together Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut on Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like typical biological terror, but inside Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Debut Feature Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as a couple named Tim and Millie, partners that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A commonly used story element, admittedly, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his sense of self in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making either of his characters the definite antagonist.

Tim and Millie confront the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. Fundamentally, they still love each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “I understand that choice”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
