The nation's top FBI official Kash Patel was seen in front of the US Senate judiciary committee on Tuesday wearing a tie featuring the logo of English Premier League team Liverpool.

Online Reactions

The choice of neckwear sparked questions on social media. For one thing, it is highly unusual for a public figure to sport a necktie featuring the logo of a business or athletic club. Additionally, Patel has never openly declared support for Liverpool in the past—at least not in words.

That said, he has been photographed sporting Liverpool ties on at least two distinct instances. The first was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was visiting congressional members on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s election victory. At the time, he was speculated to be entering the administration. The second occurred roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a media briefing announcing the arrest of narcotics traffickers by US law enforcement.

A Collection

Interestingly, the necktie used on Tuesday was distinct from the previous item. The earlier version had broad lines and a discrete logo, while the latest one featured thinner stripes and a more prominent logo—known as the classic design.

The fact that he owns several Liverpool ties implies that his selection is deliberate.

Contentious Hearing

At Tuesday’s session, the mood turned heated on multiple occasions. Patel had a loud argument with US senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He defended his leadership of the FBI, his dismissal of longtime staff involved in probes related to the Capitol attacks, and a social media post in which he declared that a person of interest was in detention for the murder of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.

“I do not consider it an error,” Patel stated to senators. “I see it as working with the people to confirm that there was a subject in detention.”

Ideological Contrast

Should Patel actually follow Liverpool, it would represent a sharp clash of political loyalties. As one of the US’s foremost law enforcement officers, Patel has been a public face of a second Trump administration that has employed heavy-handed tactics to affect various aspects of public life.

This includes operations by ICE in open areas that have resulted in the detention of many of foreign nationals regardless of their residency or citizenship. It also includes the sending of government officers to liberal US cities in due to alleged higher offense levels—assertions that have been debunked.

Liverpool’s Ethos

Liverpool, on the other hand, is known to be one of the more progressive teams in the continent, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.

Legendary Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once stated: “I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone supporting each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a portion of the rewards at the end of the day.”

Though the business of Liverpool have evolved in modern times, elements of collectivist thinking persist. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who guided the club to multiple triumphs from 2015 to 2024, summed up his own politics by remarking: “When I succeed, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”

Past Tensions

Liverpool’s fans also have a significant history of opposition toward law enforcement. A lot of this originates in the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which took the lives of 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police accused the crowd of hooliganism and intoxication. Subsequently, independent inquiries revealed that the stampede was due to gross negligence by authorities, who had misled the people to shift responsibility.

Patel’s History

Patel rose to prominence after the events of 6 January 2021, when he supported a legal aid initiative for those detained in relation to the Capitol breach. A career prosecutor and legal aide to right-wing figures, Patel leveraged his ties with the first Trump administration to develop commercial projects and a media career. In both roles, he promoted multiple conspiracy theories, including discredited allegations of election fraud and misleading information about Covid-19 vaccines.
