Two Cuba-Headed Humanitarian Ships Listed Lost subsequent to Leaving Mexico.
A comprehensive search and rescue operation is presently ongoing in the Caribbean region for two lost sailboats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from Mexico to Havana.
Military Search Missions Initiated
The Mexican government has deployed naval assets and military search aircraft to locate the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting no fewer than nine sailors, according to a official statement.
The boats had been expected to reach Havana on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the statement clarified.
Background of Relief to the Nation
The island nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country endures multiple power outages across the country.
"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are outfitted with suitable safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official for the convoy said.
The nine-person crew are citizens of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with maritime rescue coordination centres from the involved countries along with their consular staff.
"Our team is collaborating completely with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Recent Humanitarian Shipment
Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had transported 14 tons of humanitarian aid to the country.
That boat, called "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bikes and foodstuffs.
Larger Political Context
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led efforts to bring essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" lack of essential goods, with in excess of 50k surgeries cancelled in Cuba because of electricity supply constraints.
Political measures have been ramped up lately, with comments from several leaders emphasizing the complex nature of diplomatic ties.
Reacting to certain proposals, a prominent government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions were initiated, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The naval forces affirmed it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to discover the vessels and ensure the well-being of the people on board.
As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
